The poem by Emily Dickinson has a strong message of love that is particularly poignant for our times.
A small amount of love is better than a large amount of “Hate” or “enmity.”
The piece was premiered by the Vancouver Chamber Choir, September 2021.
Review by Conductor Brian Stevens
“Good Lord, I love this piece! This lush, moving setting of Emily Dickinson’s poignant poem is a wonderful introduction to Gerda’s compositional talents.
It features beautiful pacing, powerful use of fluid textures, deeply moving close harmonies with wrenching dissonances that support the text.
She so carefully handles the text, illuminating each word and phrase with grace.
The moment she introduces the soaring soprano descant is transcendent and memorable.
This will be the piece I use to introduce Gerda’s music to my singers next season. I can’t wait.
